Umbrella Movement Day 51

Day 51 of the Umbrella Revolution/Movement in Hong Kong. (Monday 17 November 2014)
  • Joshua Wong says that despite increasing opposition to the protests, the students will only retreat if a better alternative to the current political reforms are proposed. He also claims that the cancellation of Home Return Permits will only increase support for the students.
  • The Hong Kong Federation of Students has called on the Hong Kong government to explain the reasons behind the cancellation of their Home Return Permits and whether there is a 'black list' of students.
  • Several scuffles have broken out overnight in Mongkok with police intervening after several anti-Occupy protesters were accused of assaulting pro-democracy protesters.
  • James Tien, the former pro-Beijing Liberal party leader has raised concerns about the ability of Leung Chun-ying's government to effectively govern as pan-democratic parties are undertaking a "non-cooperative" campaign in the Legislative Council through filibustering non-urgent bills in an attempt to pressure the government.
  • John Tsang, Hong Kong's Financial Secretary has called on the protest to end as it has reached 50 days and also stated that defying court orders are illegal. He also said that the protesters should end their occupation in order to maintain their "moral high ground" and to respect the rule of law.
  • The police presence has grown over the past few days with marked officers taking observation points at the protest sites.
  • One student from PolyTechnical University and two students from the Lingnan University Student Council have been denied entry into mainland China. They had their Home Return Permits and belongings confiscated after being questioned by the authorities. It is believed that the students assisted the Occupy protest with logistical needs.
  • Police will take action "this week" to clear protesters from some occupied sites just as a new poll showed that nearly 70 per cent of the public wants the movement to end. Police have released a press release confirming that they will assist with bailiffs in the clearance of the areas surrounding Citic Tower in Admiralty from the 18th of November.
  • For the first time since it started the poll in September, Chinese University found more people opposed the Occupy movement than supported it.
  • Chris Patten, the last British governor of Hong Kong has said that the "one country, two systems" structure has worked well in Hong Kong so far and that China is a sovereign country.
  • The Mingpao newspaper has uncovered links between the Chinese Communist Party and military figures with the anti-Occupy groups in Hong Kong.
